We know that it can be a daunting process to use a defibrillator on someone.

We receive many questions on how someone needs to prepare to use an AED, and more importantly if the person will hurt them.

Should jewellery be removed before using an AED?

The quick answer is no.

You don’t need to remove any jewellery or piercings from someone suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

Leaving jewellery on will bring no harm to the person.  In fact, taking the time to remove any jewellery or piercings will delay giving the first shock to the victim.

It is important to act quickly when using a defibrillator, as the first 10-minutes of SCA are the most important.

In saying that, do not place the AED pads directly onto any metallic jewellery. Ensure you adjust the placement of your AED pads if necessary.
