New South Australian AED Laws Coming Into Effect – Is Your Business Ready?

From 1 January 2026, it will be mandatory for many South Australian facilities to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) installed and registered.

The Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Act 2022 is a major step forward in public safety. Under the new law, a wide range of buildings and public transport vehicles will be required to install and maintain AEDs – ensuring lifesaving devices are accessible in case of sudden cardiac arrest.

Who is affected?

If you’re the owner or operator of any of the following, you may be required to comply:

  • Commercial offices over 600m²

  • Residential apartment blocks

  • Shopping centres and retail complexes

  • Sporting facilities and clubrooms

  • Schools, childcare centres, TAFEs and universities

  • Public swimming pools and aquatic centres

  • Retirement and aged care communities

  • Correctional facilities and custodial police offices

  • Caravan and residential parks

  • Theatres, casinos and licensed venues

  • Any newly constructed or significantly altered commercial premises from Jan 2026 onwards

  • Public buses, trams and trains

What you need to do by 1 January 2026:

1. Install AEDs
You must install at least one AED in any building or space over 600m². Larger spaces require one AED per 1,200m² of floor area.

2. Maintain and test the units
Each AED must be inspected and tested at least once every 12 months to remain compliant. Failure to maintain can result in penalties of up to $20,000.

3. Register each AED
All installed devices must be listed on the official South Australian AED Register.

4. Ensure clear signage
AEDs must be clearly marked and easy to find in an emergency.

Why this matters

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen without warning – and having an AED on-site can significantly increase survival rates. With these changes, South Australia is making it easier for the public to access life-saving tools when seconds matter most.
